History for Car Enthusiasts: Early Generation Chevy Camaros (1967-1981)

1971 Chevy Camaro

First Generation (1967-1969):

  • The first generation Camaro was introduced in September 1966 as a 1967 model year vehicle, and was designed to compete with the Ford Mustang, which had been introduced in 1964.
  • It was available as a 2-door coupe or convertible, with a range of engine options, including a 3.8-liter inline-six, a 4.1-liter V6, and a range of V8 engines, including a 5.7-liter V8 that produced up to 375 horsepower.
  • The first generation Camaro was built on the F-body platform, which it shared with the Pontiac Firebird. It had a long hood and short rear deck, and featured a sporty, aggressive look that was popular with young, performance-oriented buyers.
  • The first generation Camaro underwent a few minor styling changes during its three-year run, including a new grille design in 1968, and a redesigned rear end in 1969. Mechanically, however, it remained largely unchanged.

Second Generation (1970-1981):

  • The second generation Camaro was introduced in February 1970 as a 1970½ model year vehicle, and featured a more muscular design than its predecessor.
  • It was available with a range of engine options, including a 7.4-liter V8 that produced up to 450 horsepower. Other engine options included a 5.0-liter V8, a 5.7-liter V8, and a 6.6-liter V8.
  • The second generation Camaro underwent several redesigns during its run, including a restyle in 1974 that resulted in a more aerodynamic look, and a major restyle in 1978 that included a new front end design and revised taillights.
  • The second generation Camaro also featured new safety features like side impact protection and improved crash protection. It was available with optional features like air conditioning, power windows, and a range of audio systems.
  • The second generation Camaro was also used as the basis for the IROC-Z performance package, which was introduced in 1985 and featured a range of performance upgrades, including a tuned suspension, larger wheels and tires, and a more powerful engine. The IROC-Z became a popular sports car in the 1980s and early 1990s.
